Horizons K-8 Celebration!
Welcome to the Burke Park Collaboration
An exciting transformation is underfoot in your neighborhood. Through collaboration between the City of Boulder Parks & Planning, Horizons K-8 School, and Growing Up Boulder, Biohabitats, as well as Keep it Clean Partnership and the City of Boulder Watershed Outreach Program, for a re-visioning of Burke Park and the adjacent Horizon's playground.
Student involvement began with the involvement of Peter Hegelbach's 4th/5th grade students to re-envision the playground areas of Horizon's school and continued with a "Make a Difference" class at Horizons with 4th-8th grades, from October 22 through November 15th, 2012. The "MAD" class was coordinated by Growing Up Boulder in collaboration with the City and Horizons. Students explored their biohabitat, participated in design charrettes and model making, interviewed and made art with community members, and presented their ideas to the city as a whole. Focus was given to site integration, paths, the school site, a community garden, an outdoor classroom, and nooks and gathering spaces around the lake. Click here for a story about the collaboration (scroll down to "Children Help Design Boulder's Burke Park") by Biohabitats.
These ideas have since been integrated into a CU Environmental Design design/build studio for an outdoor classroom at Burke Park. Click here to learn how CU's Environmental Design students are taking the initial outreach ideas forward, and here for related press on the design build project.
The playground was completed in September 2014. See clips from the celebration event, held September 18, 2014 here.
